Many of you will probably get defensive here and say that you need grains. You have been told that grains are and excellent source of fiber, vitamins and

they are heart heathy. Well, think again.

Wheat, rice, barley, corn and other similar crops are all grains. They are very high in carbohydrates and low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and that is

not very good.

Common Myths

So, the first myth is that “grains have lots of  fiber.” That is completely false! Yes, it is true that grains have fiber; but in comparison to other natural foods, not  a lot. Fruits and vegetables have between 2 and 7 times more fiber than grains. Now, that sounds good, doesn’t it?  So you don’t need to worry about fiber on the paleo diet.

Ok, secondly, “Vitamins and minerals are important!” Very true, I do need plenty of vitamins and minerals. But how reliable are grains for those? They’re not. Can anyone feed me a meal of only grains and give me the amount of vitamins and minerals I need? NO. Fruits and veggies have what I need. So eating grains for vitamins and minerals is  completely pointless.

“It’s the foundation of the FDA’s food pyramid!” First of all  “Governmental endorsements(claims) are not points in your favor, grain-eater; they are strikes against you.” It’s really sad, but it’s the truth. The government is saying that grains are good more for economic benefits, than your health; maybe only for economic benefits!!! And the worst part is that  the “healthy” (more like health-ruining) food pyramid is being tought to kids all across  America. The health of a human being is becoming destroyed for what? Money!

Toxic anti-nutrients.

They cause loads of problems. Humans are not evolved to deal with them. We only started 10,000 years ago when farming developed. Some animals are evolved to deal with the anti-nutrients, like birds and rats, but humans are not. It takes a lot of time and work to make grains even edible, lowering the amounts of the anti nutrients; but they are still there.

  • Lectins- They cause gut irritating problems that can lead to autoimmunity, diabetes and a host of other diseases.
  • Gluten- it’s probably worse. Some are intolerant to gluten and they can’t eat any. But those who can have to watch out too. It can even put you at a higher risk of death, according to a large study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, mainly by heart disease and cancer.
  • Phytates can also cause problems too, they make nutrients bio-unavailable (meaning it bonds with nutrients and minerals so your body cannot absorb them)
All these anti-nutrients are found in grains. And there is absolutely no convincing reason that you should eat grains.
If meat, vegetable and fruits are available to you do your best to avoid grains, for your well being! I know I will!
